Bask in the tranquility of this picturesque area situated by the River Cam. Walk alongside the river or take part in the traditional Cambridge activity of punting. You can rent a punt yourself or take a guided tour. Alternatively, sit with a picnic and watch other people meander down the river. The Backs is located parallel to the back of several University of Cambridge colleges, giving it its name. Bring your camera with you and photograph the grand architecture of the buildings. The area can get very muddy, so wear robust shoes if you plan on going on a walk. • Cyclists reign here, completely spoiling any walk you may choose. They ride into you, across you and are reckless. They should be made to dismount in pedestrian areas, and managed. Cambridge city...

  • How disappointing. You can only see the best of Cambridge from The Backs and to do that you have to be in a punt as the banks are privately owned and are therefore inaccessible. As we're both nearing 80 we did not want to go in a punt!
  • Amazing place for a walk, we visited relatively early on a Monday morning and the footpaths were very quiet. I’d imagine around midday it would be completely different. You get some stunning views of all the colleges.
