A quadrangular castle with buildings lining the outer walls, Bodiam Castle was once a bustling household. The outer walls were meant for display as well as defense, supporting important buildings to the household's function. The inner court holds the remains of a great hall located near the pantry and kitchens, as well as the Dalygrigge family's private chambers. The outer walls are mostly intact while the inner are ruins, but enough of the original floor plan is recognizable to identify the structures. Well worth a visit. Exactly what I would expect an ancient castle to be like! Far better preserved than many. Interesting exhibits and history video. Usual excellent National Trust facilities and friendly and highly-informative volunteers. Ducks near the Castle View tea room expect to be fed!!

Very impressive ruins, great fun for young kids, the perfect introduction to medieval castles, with all the architectural and engineering concepts that come these: the mote, draw bridge, battlements, towers, etc. The volunteers did a great job of demonstrating armoury and explaining how things were in the past. Great for picnicking on the grassy banks overlooking the mote and Castle. My daughter also enjoyed the archery lesson.
