Funchal — 6 nights

The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte and Universo de Memorias Joao Carlos Abreu are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get in touch with nature at 25 Fontes Falls and Madeira Mountain Expeditions. Get out of town with these interesting Funchal side-trips: Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse (in Ponta do Pargo), Engenhos do Norte (in Porto da Cruz) and Calheta Beach (in Calheta). And it doesn't end there: trek along Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto, enjoy the sand and surf at Praia de Machico, get outside with Eira do Serrado, and take in the exciting artwork at Caravel Art Center.

Pearl of the Atlantic
Madeira, the largest island of the eponymous archipelago, serves as one of Portugal's top year-round holiday destinations. Although it draws a growing number of visitors, the island retains much of its relaxed atmosphere and provides an alternative vacation idea for travelers seeking a tropical paradise still relatively unspoiled by mass tourism. The capital city of Funchal, settled in the 15th century, attracts the biggest crowds and serves as a convenient stopover for trans-Atlantic cruise ships sailing from the Caribbean. When you get tired of exploring Fuchal's lively streets and beaches, hop on a boat tour of the archipelago for some whale watching or big game fishing.
