Adjara Region travel guide
Adjara Region is an autonomous republic of Georgia along the sub-tropical western coast with a turbulent political history. As a result, this vacation spot supports a diverse group of approximately 400,000 people. Its political unrest includes colonization by the Greeks in the 5th century BCE, falling under Rome in the 2nd century BCE, being conquered by the Ottomans in 1614 and subsequently being converted to Islam, only to be established as a Soviet Socialist Republic in 1921. Following Georgia's 2003 Rose Revolution, the region once again entered political upheaval when then-leader Abashidze resisted, an event deemed "The Adjara Crisis." Today, the region evokes peace in more ways than one. Visitors can unwind at one of the several spas and health resorts populating the temperate rainforest hillsides, rising more than 4,000 m (9,800 ft) above sea level in some areas. Relax on the seaside below the lush vegetation, or explore the coastal capital of Batumi on a tour of its LED-lit buildings and fountains, botanical gardens, historic buildings, and monuments that pay homage to the region's fascinating past.
