Funchal — 11 nights

The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
Visit Blandy's Wine Lodge and Capelinha N. S. Fatima for their historical value. Step out of the city life by going to Pico do Arieiro and Safari Madeira Island. Explore Funchal's surroundings by going to Engenhos do Norte (in Porto da Cruz), Ponta do Pargo (Church of Sao Pedro & Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse) and Igreja Do Senhor Bom Jesus (in Ponta Delgada). There's much more to do: see Off-Road Tours, stroll through Cabo Girao, take in nature's colorful creations at Monte Palace Madeira, and steep yourself in history at Colegio dos Jesuitas do Funchal.

To see traveler tips, ratings, other places to visit, and other tourist information, refer to the Funchal trip itinerary maker website.

Pearl of the Atlantic
Madeira, the largest island of the eponymous archipelago, serves as one of Portugal's top year-round holiday destinations. Although it draws a growing number of visitors, the island retains much of its relaxed atmosphere and provides an alternative vacation idea for travelers seeking a tropical paradise still relatively unspoiled by mass tourism. The capital city of Funchal, settled in the 15th century, attracts the biggest crowds and serves as a convenient stopover for trans-Atlantic cruise ships sailing from the Caribbean. When you get tired of exploring Fuchal's lively streets and beaches, hop on a boat tour of the archipelago for some whale watching or big game fishing.
