View a source of pride for the citizens of Haarlem at Cathedral of Saint Bavo, an elaborate Gothic structure built during the 13th century. As you approach, try to spot the tower that rises above everything else. Renaissance and Baroque art decorates the main cathedral, including the pulpit sculpture, the tombstone of Bishop Triest, and the mesmerizing painting of Saint Bavo Entering the Monastery. If you have a chance to explore the crypt under the choir, more paintings and church artifacts await. Before you leave, take a few moments to visit the former sacristy, which has been converted into a museum displaying historical artifacts from Haarlem's Catholic past. We went to see the Xmas crypt dioramas and were lucky enough to do so before this lockdown. Really special for kids and adults. The church itself is fairly magnificent if you like churches. Very welcoming for kids but the crypt has stairs.

Beautiful Catholic Cathedral with rich art displays of different periods in its architecture. The only Cathedral in the Netherlands built as a Cathedral, showing the grandeur and holiness of God in many ways. Underwent a major renovation in the last decades and is a real pearl of the city. The liturgies celebrated show even more what it is all about and what the end of its beauty is. Many side chapels of different saints with altars and images in differen styles, among which stand out the Sacred Heart Altar in the south transept, very rich in symbolism, and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, also with rich symbolic decorations.
