Until the Middle Ages, Singel--a picturesque canal--surrounded the Dutch capital. After the city expanded, the canal continued to act as a moat around the city center, and today it is the innermost canal of Amsterdam's ring of famous canals. Running from the IJ lake near the city's central train station to Muntplein Square, where the water joins the Amstel River, the canal cuts through the city center, passing many significant tourist attractions. You'll see part of the infamous Red Light District along its banks, as well as a house that claims to be the narrowest in the world at only 1 m (3.3 ft) wide. Amsterdam's popular flower market, Bloemenmarkt, includes market stalls aboard boats in the canal. Make your Amsterdam itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • Because it's so central, you will probably keep coming back to the Singel. Enjoy the walk, and admire the houses. They're so typical of old Amsterdam, and not all are the same, so the view is worth...

  • Singel is one of the many canals that make up the Amsterdam Canal Rings and one with many houseboats, some of which if sitting on dry land could easily be mistaken for actual houses. The whole area and the bridges over the Singel is very picturesque and well worth visiting.
  • These photos were captured at around 9.30am one December morning… the city was peaceful and just beginning to wake up…
