Peek into the intimate life of Swedish royalty at Sofiero Palace, one of the family's country mansions. Originally built in 1865, the home was expanded to its current size in 1876 when King Oscar II came into power. In 1905 the castle was given as a wedding gift to the king's grandson, future King Gustaf VI Adolf, who loved the castle so much he donated it to the general public upon his death. Take a guided tour or use an audio guide to explore the upstairs of the castle with rooms decorated in period furnishings, or stop by the lower level, which now houses a cafe. The castle is best-known for its stunning rhododendron gardens featuring 500 different species. Take a picnic on the sprawling lawns and soak in the greenery. • Beautiful gardens, simply stunning. The house is nicely laid out and stylised with historic detail the latest evokes the royals that lived there. The gardens though are the jewel!

  • The castle grounds boast a huge garden which is kept beautifully. Kids friendly. We could easily spend half a day here! The castle itself has a small exhibit about her history. It used to be a summer....  more

  • I loved visiting this castle and its gardens. Special mention to the amount of rhododendrons that the late king Gustaf VI and his first wife Princess Margaret laid out and took care of. The inside of the castle is not so surprising, but the outside makes it a well worth visit!
  • Visit the castle it’s worth it. I was visiting a wedding there. It was so beautiful when the guests where leaving and you had the place later on just for yourself. Entrance staff was so helpful with where to go ans how everything works. The castle is a must see. Plane at least a whole day. Visiting everything in the garden as well.
