Perched atop a hill overlooking the picturesque port city, Palheiro Gardens draws visitors from around the world with its vast collection of camellias, which includes several species that are more than two centuries old. The English-style gardens sit about 500 m (1,600 ft) above sea level and benefit from a microclimate ideal for growing a range of native and exotic plants from Africa, Australia, and China. The focal point of this manicured park is an 18th century manor house that was originally built as a hunting lodge. Open throughout the year, the gardens form part of a large estate boasting its own hotel, golf course, and orchid nursery. The garden is quite impressive, if a bit in need of maintenance. It was calm and generally well kept. The tea house lured us in with coffee and cake - the coffee was the most expensive and at the same time worst I have had on Madeira. The cake was okay. I had the soup of the day which must have been a family recipe…as it was as bland as can be, direly in need of seasoning. If you need to go there come for the garden, but do stay away from the tea house.

When visiting Madeira, Palheiro Ferreiro gardens is a must-do, silent and fresh air just opposed to the busy streets of Funchal. Have a cup of tea in the teahouse and enjoy the marvellous arboretum and flora.
