The beautiful Monte Palace Madeira surrounds a palace built by Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues when he acquired the property in 1897. The garden aspect was established 100 years later in 1987 and features exotic plants as well as native ones, primarily from the Madeira forest. Travel along pathways past lakes with koi fish. View artworks integrated into the landscape, such as the garden's ceramic tile collection from the 15th century. A museum houses an exhibit of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture and a collection of minerals and gems from around the world. A magical place and absolutely worth a visit. Getting there by car is the easiest way but there is limited parking and roads are very steep and narrow. Walking through the park takes about 2+ hours. You have to cover some elevation but all is very walkable. Massive diversity of plants, flowers and art. Sometimes it reminds you almost a bit (too much) of Disney World but beautiful nonetheless.

Monte Palace is situated over Funchal, with spectacular views from the ‚bottom‘ part of the hill it‘s on. You have to walk down and up again to get out, but they generally created a nice scenic atmosphere with little waterways, the slightly bigger lake and Japanese accents. Also a lot of it is in the shade, so generally a good walk around as long as you‘re fairly fit. There is an option to come back up with a little shuttle for an extra fee of about 3 Euros.
