Create an itinerary including The Arctic Cathedral
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit The Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. • We didn't have time to visit the inside. The outside made for some great photos. It really sticks out.

  • Must pay 5 euros to get in? No worth it!
  • Nice walk from cruise ship across the bridge. Glad we didn't pay for the ships excursion. Cost about £9 for us both to look inside. Norwegian style so nothing like our cathedrals inside. It was more beautiful on the outside. So wouldn't recommend going in.
