A Palermo landmark and a supremely luxurious residence, Palazzo Conte Federico provides insight into life as a European aristocrat. The Hohenstaufen-descended count or his multi-talented wife will take you on a tour of their home (also a bed and breakfast), where you can glimpse fine decorations from around the world. Inspect a wealth of interesting artifacts, including antique armchairs, religious frescoes, and suits of armor. If you're lucky, the Countess may even treat you to a performance in the concert hall, where the impressive piano was once used by Wagner. We were shown around this beautifully restored palazzo by la Contessa Federico herself. She gave a lot of her time and was very open about what it was like to live her life. Fascinating.

The count's son was noble, personable, entertaining and self-effacing. A warm and informative host, one never had the impression that he thought of himself any differently than you or I. I believe my wife fell in love with him, but she came away with me, and he showed no partiality to any guests. Tour in English and Italian, one could sense his deep love of that marvelously mellifluous language and his family's history and home. With all the wonderful experiences on offer in Palermo, this experience must be rated: can't miss.

An absolute gem packed with so much history. The guide was a member of the family that still lives there. Even though we were the only English speaking visitors, everything was translated for us. The tour takes an hour and you are guided via 15 rooms. The house is build around a medieval tower (the only out of many still preserved). The entrance is 10euro, but it is much more worth it than many other palazzi in Palermo.
