Cattedrale di Palermo was erected in 1185 to replace a ninth-century mosque. Explore the church and observe the different styles--attributed to a long history of additions, alterations, and restorations--that characterize the building. Look for the column with the Quran verse carved on it, a remnant from the mosque, and admire the 13th-century mosaic of the Madonna. The Sacrament chapel is adorned with precious stones and lapis lazuli. You can visit the tombs of several important figures who have been laid to rest here, including Emperor Henry VI, Peter II of Sicily, and Constance of Aragon. Head to the roof for views of the city. Lovely artefacts and a beautiful structure. The crypts were especially interesting, beautiful view from the roof. My only complaint is there was no tissue in any of the washrooms.

Impressive building and gorgeously decorated inside. Highly recommend to walk there without rush to feel the atmosphere and spirit of this place. If you get to climb to the roof, you'll get the chance to enjoy he most beautiful view in the city.

Lovely Cathedral. Plenty to keep you occupied including roof walk at very reasonable cost. Fortunate to be there for Mass.Though not allowed into the body of the Cathedral there to see the procession. Also nice little cafes and shops close by.
