Tour Galway Cathedral, one of the most architecturally notable buildings in the city. Built in 1958 on the grounds of a former prison, the site is officially named Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas. Admire the Renaissance-style dome and pillars, along with the church's rose windows and intricate mosaics. The dome, at 44.2 m (145 ft), can be seen on Galway's skyline. Visit for Mass, held every day, to listen to the organ play and choir sing. Work out when and for how long to visit Galway Cathedral and other Galway attractions using our handy Galway tour planner.

  • It's a large and beautiful cathedral. If you've seen a lot of European cathedrals, this won't be mind-blowing, but we did find it lovely and peaceful inside. We also appreciated that it's free to go.....  more

  • Absolutely beautiful cathedral. Came in whilst visiting the Galway area and I was absolutely blown away by the stained glass windows and enormous statues inside. There is a ton of seating the front, sides and rear of the main alter and I’d love to visit again for mass. The shop sells amazing items including beautiful marble rosaries and religious items for all occasions. Definitely stop in if you’re passing by!
  • I'm not a Christian by any means but I do appreciate the serenity of a location and this has it. We visited St Mary's in Dingle and that serenity was lacking. The building was more modern than expected but the colours in the dome and from the stained glass were sublime. Sometimes I envy people their faith and get the fact that buildings like this can reinforce it. I won't be converted to religion any time soon but I think we'd be worse off without places like this where you can come and reflect regardless of your spiritual leanings.
