A preserved ruin along the Shannon River set against green and rolling hills, Clonmacnoise offers a glimpse into the religious and cultural history of the monasteries in Ireland. Founded in 546 CE by Saint Ciarán, the monastery was a center of learning and trade for over 600 years until it began to decline around the 12th century due to a diminishing population. Visit many of the ruined and partially ruined buildings on the site, including temple Finghín and McCarthy's tower, cross of the scriptures, and the cathedral, where the last High King of Ireland is buried. Definitely worth the detour. Clonmacnoise is simply breathtaking. It's position along the River Shannon is magical, Inwas fortunate to see the see sun set while I was here and it was just stunning...

Great for pics. Don't go if it's raining. Best pics when blue sky. I was in autumn was very pretty, lots of trees with yellow leaves, fab pics. I am happy with my pictures.

Was only passing through but really beautiful area. We got a fabulous day so the views were lovely. Downfall - Felt that the price to enter was a bit steep considering the location. Have been to similar amenities that didn't charge.
