Local mythology claims Rock of Cashel, a limestone hill crowned by a group of medieval buildings, came into existence when Saint Patrick banished Satan from a cave in a nearby mountain. Kings of Munster lived here for several centuries before the Norman invasion, adding structures to fortify their hilltop seat of power. Little structural evidence of that time remains, as the oldest building still standing on the rock is a round tower constructed sometime in the 12th century. Next to the tower stands a Romanesque chapel, Gothic cathedral, and a 15th century castle. Beautiful ruins in a lovely location. Very peaceful setting. We booked ahead of the chapel tour. The guides were friendly and informative. It was a nice break on our drive from Dublin to Kenmare.

Stunning views are afforded from the high hilltop on which the castle sits. The castle itself is wonderful, and I would recommend the guided tour to anyone wishing to learn more about Irish history. A place where myth and fact merge and create something unique and enduring.

What a wonder, if you interested in castles that resemble movie ones, this place is just out of this world when you look it from afar, also a lot of history that you can learn from films being exhibited in a quiet room beside the castle. A must go if you like the feeling and energy that those places emanate.
