Trip Planner:   Europe  /  UK  /  England  /  Somerset  /  Bath  /  Bath Abbey
Experience the rich history of Bath Abbey, one of England’s last grand medieval churches. Begun in 1499, the abbey was designed with a cruciform plan, used relatively rarely in other churches of that time. The interior contains fan vaulting, low aisles, nave arcades, supporting buttresses, and 52 windows, occupying about 80 percent of the wall space and giving the abbey an unusual impression of lightness. Climb the 212 steps to the top of the abbey’s tower to see the bell chamber, stand on top of the vaulted ceiling, and sit behind the clock face. There’s no need to pre-book your guided tower tour, with tickets sold at the abbey’s gift shop. Make Bath Abbey part of your personalized Bath itinerary using our Bath trip itinerary planner .

  • The history of the statues of São Paulo and St. Peter on each side of the entrance is very cool. St. Peter was beheaded after the Anglican Church became an official religion and glued his head back without neck... It is not a particularly exceptional cathedral, but it is very old, has gone through some fires and perrengues. The ceiling is interesting and they are under renovation. The reform yes is genius, because they will use the hot water that already passes under the cathedral to heat it up and save a lot of resources. Admission is free and has a donation that you are encouraged to make. I donated the suggested value and they were so grateful that I felt I should have donated less. Then stay the tip. To climb the towers has tickets. I didn't go. To make the visit of the excavations of the reform too and does not work on the weekend.

  • Free to get in, it's a very pretty Abbey and to see the King Edgar coronation stained glass window was awesome. However half the place is closed off and ruins any pictures you may wish to take.  more »

  • Beautiful Abbey. Lots of history, stunning stained glass windows. Currently undergoing building work but still a wonderful place to visit. Suggested entry donation of £4 but you can gain entry for free or less. Lovely gift shop with religious books, items as well as tourist gifts. Wonderful experience.
  • I thoroughly loved my time at the Abbey! It is so worshipful! I loved the stories told in the stain glass windows, they are majestic! The architecture and detail is amazing! I stayed for their Evensong service and found the pipe organ and chorus voices in this atmosphere nothing short of bringing Glory to God!
