Though it is often seen as merely a stopover city, Plovdiv is actually a lively university town with bohemian cafes, a thriving art scene, and exciting nightlife.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Assen's Fortress and "St. st. Konstantin and Elena" Church. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Dzhumaya Mosque and Nebet Tepe. Step out of Plovdiv to go to Smolyan and see Pamporovo Ski Resort, which is approximately 1h 25 min away.
