More than 20 million people call Cairo their home and, as soon as you set foot in the sprawling metropolis, it's evident they make it crowded and chaotic, but also exuberant and charming.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan and Al-Azhar Mosque. Your inner history buff will appreciate Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids and Gayer-Anderson Museum (Bayt al-Kiritliya). Take a break from Cairo with a short trip to Great Sphinx in Giza, about 34 minutes away. There's much more to do: explore the world behind art at The Coptic Museum, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Greek Orthodox Church of St. George (Mari Girgis), stop by Islamic Cairo, and take in the exciting artwork at Sondos Papyrus.

You can drive from Alexandria to Cairo in 2.5 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or fly. In October, plan for daily highs up to 35°C, and evening lows to 24°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 19th (Mon) so you can travel to Luxor.

Start off your visit on the 20th (Tue): see the interesting displays at Le Scarabe Papyrus Museum, appreciate the history behind Tomb of Queen Nefertari, then explore the different monuments and memorials at Valley of the Queens, and finally make a trip to Deir el-Shelwit Temple.
