Brukenthal National Museum represents a complex of six museums housed in nine buildings dispersed all over the city, displaying a variety of exhibits ranging from artwork to religious artifacts to trophies. European and national art galleries are found in the Baroque palace of the former Habsburg governor of Transylvania, Samuel von Brukenthal, who established its first collections around 1790. Today the palace also houses a library featuring contemporary books, incunabula, and illuminated manuscripts. An old pharmacy building from 1569, where Samuel Hahnemann invented homeopathy, houses the museum of pharmacology. Other buildings shelter a contemporary art gallery, a historical museum, a museum of natural history, a museum of arms and hunting, and restoration laboratories.     The stuff and the organisation were terrible. We bought two tickets for European art and for the Gotthic exposition. We asked 2-3 persons how to find the Gotthic exposition but we were not able to...  more »

    I agree with the comments below that the lighting is bad (central room chandeliers instead of spotlights) and the ticketing is confusing. However the great breughel the elder painting of the slaughter of the innocents is very well lit and you can walk right up to it to see it in all its gory detail. That alone is worth it. And of course the van Eyck and others are encased in a box and better lit up as well.

    Brukenthal Palace is one of the most important Baroque edifices in Romania, having been built between the years 1778 and 1788 by Baron Samuel von Brukenthal. The palace is located in the Big Square in the city of Sibiu, on the west side.
