See what peasant life was like hundreds of years ago at Muzeul National al Satului "Dimitrie Gusti". The open-air site, founded on the shores of a lake in 1936, exhibits nearly 300 structures of rural architecture brought from Romania's historical regions. Walk among steep-roofed peasant homes, farmsteads, log cabins, thatched barns, windmills, and water mills. Take time to visit the steep belfry of the wooden church, the earth houses, and the carved entrances of the 18th-century houses from Berbeşti. Amenities include a souvenir shop selling folk arts and crafts, a stall with traditional Romanian sweets and cakes, and a restaurant set in an original 19th-century inn. Call in advance for guided tours, which are available in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian. This place is incredible! You can spend the whole day in there. It is an open space museum with hundreds of exibiths from all over Romania. And those houses are a hit! You can learn everything about village life in the past few centuries, about building techniques, about different religions, about different parts of the country. It is one of the best museums that I have visited! And the price is a joke. 15 lei only.

In the Winter this museum park is good for about a 1 hour stroll. Each individual cottage had an information board in Romanian and English (with funny translations). Sadly, all the cottages were padlocked shut. My 9 year old found the many cats roaming the park more interesting than the buildings, so I'm glad they're there. The cafe didn't look very inviting.
