Old Bazaar, Skopje, Skopje

Step back in time at Old Bazaar, Skopje, the city's primary historical center of trade and a showcase of historic Ottoman architecture. Located along the Vardar River in Skopje's traditional merchant quarter, the marketplace still buzzes with commerce today. Visit the bazaar and explore the multitude of shops, cafes, and other businesses that line its street. Note the mixture of both Turkish buildings--including bathhouses, mosques, caravanserais, and a clock tower--as well as remnants of Skopje's even earlier Byzantine past. Be sure to stop into one of the many eateries in the bazaar for a bite of some classic Macedonian food, including the meaty dish known as "chevapi."
