At Stobi, walk through the well-preserved remains of an ancient Roman town that once stood at the crossroads of the Aegean world and the Balkans. Strategically placed at the confluence of two rivers, the first settlement was built in the 6th and 7th centuries BCE. Up until the earthquake of 518 CE, the ancient town was an important military, administrative, and trade hub of the Roman and early Byzantine empires. View the remains of ancient sanctuaries, Christian basilicas, luxurious private palaces, and public baths, as well as carved columns and stones. The oldest items found on the site are ceramic and bronze objects from the Neolithic and Iron Ages. Do not miss the stunning floor mosaics under your feet, the famous theatre, or the temple of Isis, an Egyptian goddess. Bring water and sunscreen.     I had the opportunity to work on this site in mosaic conservation, and to say it's a beautiful site is an understatement. Ruins are about what you'd expect they'd look like, but hearing the site explained by a tour guide, or even doing a little research beforehand, lends a better look to the whole site. Archaeologists and conservators work tirelessly to ensure the site endures for years to come and so it's something interesting for tourists to look at. Please, PLEASE, take a trip to Stobi if you ever have the opportunity, because even Macedonia itself looks like something out of a video game. It's beautiful~
