Jardim Botanico, Coimbra

#1 of 8 in Parks in Coimbra
Fueled by the rise of Portugal's seafaring empire, Jardim Botanico features a wealth of plant species from exotic reaches of the globe. Pay a visit to the garden, operated by the University of Coimbra, and explore the 13 hectares (32 acres) of green space via its network of pathways, trails, and courtyards. You'll pass through different themed areas ranging from ordinary woods to the lime grove, tropical section, greenhouses, and more. Admire the riotous array of flora that began to arrive in Portugal from distant lands during overseas exploration in the 15th century, culminating in the garden's foundation in 1772. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the history and varieties of plants in the garden, but you must make arrangements in advance. Our Coimbra trip planning tool makes visiting Jardim Botanico and other Coimbra attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • It's one of the few free visits and it's worth walking on that. there are areas better maintained than others but spawning is very nice. Personally I recommend you start in the university area and so go down, we did it upside down and that's it all uphill. At the end of the river exit there is an old exhibition tram ideal for taking photos

  • The botanical garden would not be bad if it was quite careful, it is quite deteriorated when compared to others of the style both in Portugal and Spain. There are many trails cut and the signs are quite poor. It doesn't attract attention at all.

  • One of the most breathtaking places to visit in Coimbra! Dive deep into nature's heart and experience the calm and soothing sounds of a forest in the middle of the beautiful Coimbra. I suggest the botanical shuttle line, inexpensive and drives from the university and back again, going through the full gardens
  • absolutely gorgeous gardens, beautifully maintained (wild, not topiary style!) and super tranquil. so... much... green. interspersed are historical relics: chapels and other ruins. an amazing way to spend a few hours.
