Stavanger Cathedral, Stavanger

3.9
Standing at the entrance to the harbor and the city, Stavanger Cathedral represents the only medieval cathedral in Norway that has preserved its original appearance. The church was built in the early 12th century in Anglo-Norman style, but after a fire in 1272 the chancel was restored in the Gothic style. The cathedral was dedicated to the 9th-century bishop St. Svithun, whose arm was one of the original relics kept in the church. Legend has it that the cathedral's first bishop Reinald raised the funds for the building's construction by marrying King Sigurd the Crusader to his second wife when the bishop of Bergen refused to do so. The park around the cathedral provides a peaceful place for a walk and offers several picnic spots. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Stavanger trip simple and quick.

  • Amazing place to visit. Really nice and peaceful. You can have a great time looking at this beautiful Cathedral learning from it's history and enjoying the amazing decorations.
  • Very interesting spot. Construction going on when we visited, on the outside facade, but inside still very accessible, although stain glass windows also removed for renovation going on. Worth the small price for admission, just a nice very old church.
