Issyk-Kul Lake, Karakol

4.6
In the northern part of the Tian Shan mountains lies Issyk-Kul Lake, offering plenty of recreational activities in a pleasant natural setting. The world's second-largest saline lake, it never freezes--even during the cool winters. At a height of 1,607 m (5,272 ft), the endorheic lake is fed by small rivers, springs, and melting snows and reaches a depth of 668 m (2,192 ft). A popular tourist zone since the Soviet era, the area boasts numerous sandy beaches surrounded by alpine meadows, thermal mineral springs, and lush forests. Go for a swim and relax under the sun, or explore the natural environment that shelters many migratory birds, such as cranes, swans, and ducks. Put Issyk-Kul Lake into our Karakol trip itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Had not realized the extent of the mountain range or size of the lake. American geography of the area was stinted by this being in the former Soviet Union. Recommend the area  more »
  • From Bishkek to Iskukul by bus to Bogombaeva . The bus doesn't leave until it's full, so it's better to have time. I waited about an hour to leave. It seems to be possible to reach Isikkul from the center of Bogombaeva on foot, but it arrives as soon as you go by taxi or the shared Marseltoka. Please tell the destination when you ride In Marcheltka. It is convenient to download the local map in the app maps me. I don't understand English, so it's better to have a map in Kyrgyzstan or Russian. The way of walking the earth was almost unusable with only a rough map about Kyrgyzstan. Isikkuru is really lush and beautiful on sunny days. Stay in the nearby Yurt and enjoy the spectacular views of the afternoon and dusk. There are a lot of Yurt, but YURT CAMP SONUN is very beautiful, and above all, the rice was very delicious, so I recommend it. There were two staff who could speak English. The toilet is Western style and there is electricity at night. During the day, you can take a walk in Isikkuru, read a book on the inn bench, listen to music, and spend a relaxing time. Because there are a lot of insects including bees, I think that it is good that there is insect repellent and itching stop if it is anxious.

  • Largest lake of Kyrgyzstan! The view is definitely stunning as there are many mountains nearby. The water is fresh in the lake and as far as I know, not a lot of people get to visit here
  • Nice but definitely overhyped and mostly overpriced. While beautiful, locals tend to through their rubbish everywhere leading to pollution, bottles and plastic on the beaches and in the water. Much is being done to educate people to not throw their plastic everywhere. Stunning views, clean water, but generally lacking good service, comfortable beds and friendly people.
