Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

4.6
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. • It is said that the church was built to thank the Virgin Mary for the demise of the Black Death, which was prevalent around 1629. It is said to be a masterpiece of Venetian Baroque, so there are many sculptures around the church and gorgeous. A huge octagonal building and a dome on the ceiling are also wonderful. This dome seems to be one of the symbols of Venice. Inside the basilica, there were statues of the Virgin and Child at the main altar, and tintrettos and Titian works were also displayed. It's a very large basilica, but there are few people who can appreciate it quietly. Located on the opposite side of Piazza San Marco, this church takes the first water bus and gets off at Salute. It is located in the triangle of the Grand Canal, and if you have time, I recommend that you go around the island. It was a very nice place.

  • If you want some rest, this basilica is a must. From the stairs you have a beautiful view of San Marco and the Grand Canal. Also the interior can be there. Beautiful paintings.

  • The beauty of this basilica honestly starts outside of the basilica itself. You arrive and are astounded by the gorgeous architecture of the building. When you then enter the basilica, you can find statues of incredible beauty all around and though its not a grand cathedral that shows might and uses a lot of gold and silver, it certainly holds its own due to the beautiful paintings displayed. When you look up to the ceiling you are astounded by the amount of statues that are displayed at a place most would forget to look. I was happy to have visited this basilica and would certainly like to return one day!
  • A truly beautiful church! What an amazing place! The building itself is a work of art. Spend at least as much time enjoying the outside as you do the inside. When inside, be sure to look up and take in the amazing statues surrounding the interior of the dome. This is a must see while in Venice. Truly amazing.
