Chiesa di Santa Giusta, Santa Giusta

Santa Giusta Cathedral, now a minor basilica (Basilica di Santa Giusta) is the former cathedral of the abolished Diocese of Santa Giusta, in Santa Giusta, province of Oristano, Sardinia, Italy. The dedication is to Saint Justa of Cagliari who, according to the tradition, was martyred here at the time of the Roman emperor Diocletian, with her companions Saints Justina and Aenidina. Almost entirely built in sandstone, it is considered one of the most important examples of Sardinian Romanesque architecture.
The cathedral was erected in the early 12th century by local and Pisan workers, the latter with experience from Pisa Cathedral. Some art historians have supposed that another church existed on the site previously, but this has not been definitely proven.
In the 16th-17th centuries the south wall was demolished to allow creation of two chapels. In 1503 the Diocese of Santa Giusta was abolished and annexed to that of Oristano. In 1847 a marble enclosure was built to encircle the presbytery, while a pulpit was added in 1876. In 1860 the former sail-shaped bell tower collapsed, and was replaced by a square bell tower in neo-Romanesque style, finished in 1906.

  • A beautiful church that with its architecture deserves to be a cathedral, but it is a basilica, among the largest Romanesque churches of Sardinia, to be counted among the most beautiful on the island. It stands on the small hill where perhaps in ancient times there was the acropolis of the ancient Phoenician city of Otocha, on which stands the current municipality of Santa Giusta. The interior is really beautiful, all stone and with many different columns. Beautiful the crypt with beautiful vaults and columns, as well as the room immediately placed to the right of the entrance. Visiting this part of Sardinia can not neglect to visit this beautiful monument.

  • The church is a small Romanic gem. The external flooring is being renovated. Beautiful interior, with diverse columns and a nice crypt.
  • Splendid Romanesque Basilica of the first half of 1100, probably built on the ancient temple of Demeter.. The façade Has a beautiful stone staircase. The interior is divided into three aises. Endowed with crypt where are preserved the relics of the Saint and of Giustina and Enedina. It Stands out on the square also embellished by a fountain with vertical jets. Coming from Oristano stands on the left of the main street.
