Explore one of Ireland's largest and oldest cemeteries of megalithic tombs at Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. The site is home to over 60 tombs, some up to 5,000 years old; 30 monuments are visible today. Begin your visit at the information center, where an exhibition helps provide the context for this ancient complex. Once you've learned about the area's rich history, set off for the Listoghill cairn, the focal point of the cemetery, surrounded by smaller satellite tombs. Wear sensible shoes, as the area features uneven terrain. The site can be quite challenging for those with mobility problems. • If you make it here, you must do the guided tour. Our tour guide explained why this area is important and if you don't do the tour it just looks like a field with some grass covered mounds. The guide explained it very thoroughly in and interesting way. Without the guide you're not going to get much out of it. You'll learn a lot about this particular site and about the history of Ireland in general.
  • An absolutely wonderful historic site in Ireland with views of several cairn and plenty of small stone circles. Parking is free and there is a small fee for entry. We went in the early morning and enjoyed a coffee from the excellent coffee truck stationed outside.
