Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Province of Munster / County Cork / Skibbereen / Drombeg Stone Circle
Take in the mystery and history of Drombeg Stone Circle, an enchanting recumbent stone circle consisting of 17 pillar stones. An excavation revealed an urn buried in the center along with the remains of a child wrapped in thick cloth. Radiocarbon dating revealed the artifacts to have originated from between 153 BCE and 127 CE. The stones are mysteriously oriented in the direction of the setting sun during the midwinter solstice, and the midpoint of the altar stone was set in line with the winter solstice sunset when viewed through a conspicuous notch in the distant hills. This is one of the most-visited megalithic sites in Ireland, so be prepared for bustling crowds. Interesting rock circle, with some information boards describing the purpose. It did take us about 1 hour from West Cork, through some small roads. I probably would NOT do it if there was something else more pressing, only because you can see the whole thing in 15 minutes, and there are other circles around supposedly. That being said, it was a peaceful place.
It was a great place to visit. The walk from the gate (dirt path) is up and down a bit, however quite easy. For something that old "do not miss it".
