Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Province of Leinster / County Wicklow / Enniskerry / Powerscourt Gardens and House
A historical estate in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains, Powerscourt Gardens and House offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the 18th-century wealthy. The estate encompasses 19 hectares (47 acres) and contains a blend of formal gardens, ornamental lakes, sweeping terraces, and meandering pathways, winding their way through 200 varieties of shrubs and trees. Originally a 13th century castle, the house underwent extensive alterations in the 1730s, when celebrated architect Richard Cassels added a Palladian facade and two circular domed towers. A century later architect Daniel Robertson designed the gardens, directing the work on the terrace nearest the house from a wheelbarrow, in which he supposedly sat to relieve pain caused by gout. This was the first place we visited after arriving in Ireland. The views did not disappoint. The gardens are beautiful, especially looking out from an elevated position down at the pond and fountain. The green Irish hills as a backdrop to the gardens are absolutely beautiful as well. We really enjoyed taking the stroll through the Japanese gardens on the property and enjoying the beauty there as well as admiring the springs through the rocks and seeing the green plants growing right out of the cracks in the rocks. It's definitely worth a visit if you're anywhere near the area.
Wonderful place to visit, also if you want to go with children. A beautiful and well served garden, the tower and the fonts. We also had lunch at the cafe, the terrace is lovely for a sunny or cloudy day! Perfect for a one day trip from Dublin. We'll be back soon, I hope
