St. Michan's Church, Dublin

4.5
St. Michan's Church may be one of the capital city's architectural landmarks, but its major appeal lies in the underground vaults, which house many mummified remains. The star attraction of the limestone vaults is an 800-year-old mummy of a Norman crusader, a man so tall the undertakers had to chop his feet off in order to fit him into a coffin. You can see this macabre world of mummies by guided tour only, but you can explore the upstairs on your own. Spend the few moments before your guide arrives by taking a look at an 18th century organ, allegedly played by composer G.F. Handel for the first-ever performance of his "Messiah" oratorio. • The church itself is quite nice, but architecturally nothing spectacular. The highlight is the crypt with the family vaults. Unfortunately, the mummies are no longer to be visited due to vandalism. But still, mainly because of the funny and informative leadership worth the €5. Very nice reception ladies!

  • We visited the church as a last stop before returning to Spain, and the surprise was an amazing. They told us that Stoker and Wilde were inspired there, and for €5 each, the guide taught us the crypt. The best is the guide, very friendly and great connoisseur of the subject. It takes you to the crypt as you arrive at the church, they are not strict with the timetables, and the outside cemetery is well worth it.

  • A little gem in Dublin. Beautiful church coupled with the fascinating adventure of the Crypt. The guide was fantastic and knowledgeable a vital part of Irish history hidden in a small Church. Would reccomend to anyone visiting Dublin!
  • This is a great place to visit if you like seeing something out of the ordinary. Your visit start inside the church, which is very basic and unimpressive. The real journey starts when you’re taken to the vaults underneath the church. Due to the dry atmosphere inside the vaults, the mummies are extremely well-kept. The guide explains everything really well and knows tons of fun facts and anecdotes about the church and about Dublin. The tour is so much fun that it will leave you wanting more.
