Donegal Castle, Donegal Town

Take a guided or self-guided tour of furnished and restored Donegal Castle to follow the history of the O'Donnell clan and other owners of the land from the 1470s to the present. First built in 1474 on the Eske River, the castle was burned in the early 1600s by the O'Donnells as they were fleeing after the Nine Years War. The castle and lands were given to Basile Brooke, an English Captain, who rebuilt and extensively expanded the buildings after the war. Examine the fine Persian rugs and French tapestries that adorn walls and floors, and read the information panels distributed throughout the castle, which explain the history and significance of the site. • This is a nice place to visit if you don't want to spend all day. The castle is fairly small but restored inside so it's not a shell. OPW managed so it might be worth your while to get an annual card ...  more »
  • Reasonably informative, very relaxed and well worth a visit. An impressive castle, sympathetically restored with a reasonably fair entrance fee.  more »

  • This made for a nice quick stop and some great pictures of the family on our way through Ireland. It is inexpensive for the entire family to check out this historic castle. It is purched on the side of a river in a quaint little town. There is limited parking but did not find it to be a problem. There are three levels to view in the partially restored structure. Definitely glad we stopped here, the kids really enjoyed it.
  • The castle itself was very nice. On an early Monday morning in January we had the place to ourselves. We paid 10€ and we're handed a recycled self guided tour sheet and shooed along. We found it very interesting would have liked it better for 5€. No one to ask questions of. Took 30 minutes reading everything.
