Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Province of Munster / County Kerry / Dingle Peninsula / Dingle / Gallarus Oratory
Climbing out of Gallarus Oratory through its window cleanses one's soul, according to local mythology. Visiting the 1,000-year-old church proves this cannot be done, as the structure's window measures only 18 cm (7 in) in length and 12 cm (5 in) in width. Despite its small dimensions, the ancient church represents the pinnacle of dry-stone architecture, built using techniques originally developed by Neolithic tomb makers. The builders cut the stones with such precision that even after a millennium the structure exhibits a smooth finish on its outside walls. Take a walk around this simple structure to fully appreciate the level of skill needed to fit the stones so precisely together. Gallarus Oratory Reviews
Definitely worth a visit. We went on New Year's eve. Great value. Great atmosphere. The man at reception is very knowledgeable and took time to explain the history and the area. more »
Visited this with a guide who explained in detail how this structure has been constructed without any cement or or any other material to hold it together. It relies on the shape and placement of the.... more »
Probably not worth the 4€ charged at the official entrance but definitely worth a visit when you enter through the FREE entrance (car park is a bit further down the road from the main site, there is a gate and then a straight path to the oratory. Look it up on Google maps you'll see.) The oratory is amazingly well preserved and it's very nice to imagine people coming here ages ago. It's a reminder of times gone by, I really love these kinds of places!
Very interesting ancient church that has withstood the test of time. The craftsmanship that went into it was outstanding. It is a small but interesting stop off and I would recommend doing so. The gentleman on the counter was very polite, helpful and knowledgeable. Any questions we had, he had the answers! Very nice to see such passion.
