This monument in Casement Square commemorates those who died in the British ocean liner, RMS Lusitania, the Lucy as she was nick-named and at the time the world's largest passenger ship, a ship which on 7th May 1915 while nearing the end of her 202nd crossing, bound for Liverpool from New York, was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale County Cork, Ireland, by a German U-boat during World War I, with the deaths of 1198, of the 1959 passengers and crew aboard, 128 of which were American citizens. Many of the victims were brought to Cobh and many are interred in the Old Church Graveyard near Cobh town. The Lusitania monument depicts two fisherman who went to the rescue of the ill fated liner. Over them is the Angel of Peace. Additional to the Lusitania Memorial, there is a Lusitania Wall of Remembrance erected on the east boundary wall of the car park on the west side of the Cunard Centre (the former Cunard Line office), on the Promenade at West Beach. This is in remembrance of the survivors and victims of the RMS Lusitania disaster that were brought ashore on 7th May 1915.
Beautiful seaside area and awesome castle like church. Nice stop off area to stretch your legs and see sites.
