#1 of 12 in Wildlife in County Clare
Burren Birds of Prey Centre provides educational flying displays of birds of prey, and the opportunity to interact with the birds first-hand. At the flying display you will see different hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls from around the world fly over your heads as the trainer describes their habits to you. Take the hawk walk to get up close and personal with the birds; you'll be given an introduction to falconry and have the chance to handle a Harris hawk for the hour. The instructor will teach you how to release and call the hawk while walking through the woods. • We were very lucky to be there on a bright sunny day and could watch a great show. Awesome birds, very good staff who gave lots of information. Definitely worth a visit which you can combine with the cave.
  • Terrific entertainment. An impressive array of birds and some even more impressive theatrics from clearly well trained raptors. The staff are engaging and clearly at the top of their game. Loads of interesting facts about the birds, including their tendency to fly off- one falcon was recently tracked down using its transponder to a spot near Shannon airport. There are large aviaries to the side where you can bone up on all the other species that didn't make the demonstration that day. There's a nice little gift shop adjoining the main arena. And the other side of the courtyard there's a great cheese shop where you can also buy vast slices of fudge and pretty good coffee too. Behind the main counter you can see huge cheeses maturing on raked shelves. Lot of little discoveries- an ideal day out for families. And of course there's the Aillwee caves at the top of the hill!
