Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Western Ireland / Province of Connacht / County Mayo / Achill Island / Keem Bay
Escape the bustle of travel with a visit to Keem Bay, considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland. Once the site of a basking shark fishery, the bay now serves as a great snorkeling spot with a Blue Flag beach--meaning it has met strict standards for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information. Historical and natural landmarks surround the bay itself, including an old British army lookout, a booley village (used in the summer to house young family members who bring their cattle to graze on the hillside), and Europe's highest cliffs in Croaghaun. There is little for food or drinks to purchase here, so consider bringing your own. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Keem Bay and many more Achill Island attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Achill Island trip maker site .
Keem Bay Reviews
Found keem bay by accident it's absolutely a beautiful place the only thing is the road to it is very narrow and didn't like to be driving that close to the cliffs my mum literally sat with her head u... more »
This beach is at the end of a scary high road around the cliff. Brilliant views. Blue flag and lifeguard hut. Lovely white sand. Path down to the beach is steep but good path and handrail. more »
A pristine blue flag beach. Lifeguard on duty. Public toilet close by. Hot tea/coffee kiosk on site. But best of all was the journey to get there!!
Stunning, stunning, stunning. What can you say about this place that hasn't already been said. Look at the pictures and read all about it, but it still doesn't prepare you for driving over the crest of that mountain on the narrowest of roads and seeing the drop to the beach for the first time. And when you get down there, just sit down and take it all in. Burn the memory into the back of your head because the next time a hard day at work starts getting to you, you can use it to sail away to somewhere where stress has no place. It's only a dot on some map in the world, but what a dot.
