Northern Stelae Field, Axum

#2 of 13 in Things to do in Axum
Historic Site · Religious Site
Tour impressive ancient Ethiopian obelisks at Northern Stelae Field, a forest of carved stone pillars of the Kingdom of Aksum. Dating back to the 4th century CE, this 750 m (2,460 ft) long field features colossal granite monoliths of mysterious origin, brought here after even more puzzling construction and transport techniques (probably involving elephants). See King Ezana's 21 m (69 ft) tall stela and the broken Great Stela measuring 33 m (108 ft) in length, both thought to be markers for ancient burial chambers. Explore stone corridors and open tombs of ancient emperors, and marvel at the techniques of ancient stonemasons.
