Admire the folk art icons and the treasury of the purported Ark of the Covenant in Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, one of the most important churches in Ethiopia. Believed to have been originally built during the reign of Ethiopia's first Christian king early in the 4th century, the church guards the gilded chest, watched over by a dedicated monk. In the 1950s Emperor Selassie commissioned the present-day construction, which hosts some of the most important religious ceremonies of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The massive modern structure features vividly painted murals and icons, and arched stained glass windows. During your visit, look for the ruins of the original St. Mary's Church. In contrast to the ancient (and ancient-looking) churches of elsewhere in Ethiopia, this is a modern beauty. Bright, airy and still with colourful murals, this is a relatively huge space for worship. more »
