Visit Ura Kidane Mihret, commonly referred to as one of the most beautiful churches on Ethiopia's largest lake. Originally built in the 14th century, before being reconstructed in the 16th, the holy place rests in a glade surrounded by lush vegetation. Step inside the Ethiopian-Orthodox convent to find numerous murals painted between 100 and 250 years ago. Keep an eye out for pieces by famous artist Alaqa Endige, which were painted during the reign of Emperor Menelik II, and are considered the attraction's most significant works. Make your way back outside and see the church's treasury located next door; it houses crowns and robes belonging to the country's previous emperors. • After a walk across the peninsula, we reached Ura Kidane Mihret. The murals being set into the wall is unusual, we didn't see these anywhere else. A very special place.  more »
  • Took a boat trip on Lake Tana and visited this church on Zege Peninsula. Walked through the line of vendors from ura port (the boat landing) about 15 minutes to reach this convent complex. Founded.....  more »
  • The guides were annoying telling us we can t walk alone and pushing is to buy stuff. I suggest anyone who goes there to download mapsme and avoid hiring a guide and visit on your own. If you wish to get info on the monasteries just wait 10min for a group and listen to their guide. Other than that the monasteries were very interesting to see, but become quickly all alike.
  • What a simple and beautiful monastery located in ura village around 2kms from zege bus station. This monastery has been in use from 14th century and the current paintings are wonderful with the freshness and clarity of the message from the stories of bible. Complete circumference is fully painted with excellent colours and lot of hard work has gone into this. Museum contains good artefacts and most of the books at display were used by monks from 13th century onwards to lead a moral and virtuous life. Entry ticket for the monastery is expensive at 150 birr.Public boat is available from bahirdar at 7 AM in the morning which drops you in front of this monastery and return boat is available at 10 AM. Journey time by public boat is 1 hour and ticket price is 70 birr which gives enough time for you to feel the restlessness of waves moving in tandem with rotation of the planet, sun rise to disperse the fog of the cold morning and the nature working tirelessly for billions of years of unknown time for mysterious reasons and a reminder that lake tana is just a tiny part of it.
