Adadi Maryam, Addis Ababa

4.4
#4 of 11 in Historic Sites in Addis Ababa
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Church
See the interior of the rock-hewn church Adadi Maryam, and hire a guide to learn about its history. From the outside, you can notice many stairs which lead to three entrances, and in the site's garden you will see a liturgical bell, a cross, and a sacred rock. As is true for all Ethiopian orthodox churches, this also consists of three parts. Inside, you can see bones of the saints. • Adadi Mariam is a small church about 60 km from Addis Ababa. It is an old church and still functional. It was founded by King (Saint) Lalibela in the 13th Century AD. If you are going to Adadi Mariam rock carved church, Thursday OR Sunday are the best as you would also visit the interesting weekly held cultural market of the Oromo people at Adadi town. Entrance fee to visit the church is 100 Ethiopian Birr per person.
