Cayman Turtle Centre: Island Wildlife Encounter, West Bay

3.8
Groups of sea turtles and an array of exotic animals appear during a visit to Cayman Turtle Centre: Island Wildlife Encounter, a turtle meat farm and conservation park. Established in 1968, the farm aims to protect the depleting population of wild green sea turtles from poaching through a combination of breeding for the meat industry, and the annual release of captive turtles into the wild. Stretching over 9.3 ha (23 ac), the farm is also home to a 2.7 m (9 ft) saltwater crocodile, an exhibit called “Predator’s Reef,” and the largest swimming pool on the island. Despite having attracted controversy in the past, there are also numerous spots where you can hold and touch yearling turtles--a rare opportunity to see the beautiful creatures up close. • Great visit to the turtle centre as part of a cruise excursion. Feeding time was amazing as was seeing the young turtles!  more »

  • All of my experiences here have been so good, I kept coming back. I love the turtle pool occupied by baby turtles, and I enjoy watching all the iguanas that live freely on the grounds. You can also feed the turtles with store-bought turtle feed (not the babies). I do hope all the turtles have enough space to move around though.
  • This is NOT a rescue facility. It's a turtle farm. Turtle meat is a culinary tradition. It is a bittersweet feeling. To see all these beautiful sea turtles so up close, but they do not live in great conditions. It was very sad to see 3 or more large turtles in a very small area. Some turtles swim and jump off the edge wanting to get out. It's very misleading. I can't recommend this place. You can however, go to different beaches of the island and see turtles swimming freely while snorkeling.
