Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal

4.7
#1 of 1,067 in Historic Sites in Canada
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." Using our international travel planner, Montreal attractions like Notre-Dame Basilica can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • A really lovely Basilica and the tours were very informative. It is a bit smaller Inside than I imagined but absolutely gorgeous. $10 admission fee  more »
  • The church and its contents are absolutely beautiful. The Aura light show was a embarrassment. We waited outside for nearly a half hour until they opened up over 20 minutes late. We came prepared.....  more »

  • The inside is beautiful. We were on a walking tour and the guide told us that the only person available to build it was Anglican, so the outside is very austere relative to the inside that was redone in the French catholic style. The windows depict figures in Montreal history. We didn’t even scratch the surface in our short visit, and the guide gave us information nonstop for almost a half hour. Book a decent amount of time if you’re into the details. The gestalt is also very impressive if you’re the in-and-out sort. I’m looking up the 1978 Pavarotti Christmas special now that I know it was filmed inside.
  • Beautiful, historic church. Gorgeous interior design (although the exterior is very plain). Altar & dome are magnificent. Stained glasses windows are lovely. We heard the organist play a few hymns and it was awesome! This church is a perfect stop for someone who is a person of faith, or someone who loves amazing architectural design. You will not be disappointed.
