Saint Sophia Cathedral, Polotsk

4.5
Saint Sophia Cathedral houses the burial vault of Duke Vseslav of Polotsk, the Wizard, who was said to have been a sorcerer as well as a werewolf. The duke invited architects from various countries to construct the cathedral in the 11th century. Look for the names of the builders inscribed in stone at the base of the cathedral. You'll see fragments of the ancient frescoes on interior walls. Only parts of the cathedral date back to the time of Vseslav. Its current appearance--a Baroque structure with towers--has not changed significantly since the 18th-century restoration. Today the cathedral serves as a concert hall with an organ. • A wonderful rebuild cathedral, with attention for the long history of Belarus
  • Why they take double price on holidays? Why they put curtains at the entrance? Why it is not allowed to take pictures there? Why the service people there not smiling, are so rude and impolite? So many questions, so few answers.
